Promoting the Right to Live in the Community

The right to live in the community is a fundamental right for all people with disabilities.

The Public Health Department, in close cooperation with the Open Society Foundations’ Mental Health Initiative, has made a substantial contribution to the reform of the care system for people with disabilities and their full social inclusion. We achieved the development of sustainable community-based services for people with disabilities and of early intervention services for children up to 3 years old, created models of inclusive education, and adjusted the legal and normative framework in the disability field.

However, there are still a lot of persons with mental and intellectual disabilities remaining segregated in residential institutions. The Soros Foundation-Moldova is committed to further support promotion of community living.
