Health and the environment

Improper management of health waste and expired or unused medicines from households can have serious repercussions on public health and the environment. Recent EU pharmacovigilance legislation recognizes that pollution of water and soil with pharmaceutical residues is an emerging environmental issue.

According to the WHO, medical waste has a higher risk of causing / spreading infections, and a significant impact on the environment compared to other types of waste. This is now amplified by the negative effects of the COVID-19 epidemic on the environment, caused by increased use of personal protective equipment by medical professionals and the general population.

During 2021, the Foundation will provide support for identifying and conducting assessment of needs regarding management of medical waste and personal protection products in the context of the COVID -19 pandemic.

In 2021, the Foundation will support efforts to create the regulatory framework for the responsible use of medicines by end-users.
